Half Birthday Celebrations
Yesterday was Adaline’s Half Birthday!
She turned 3.5 🙂
I’ve always wanted to celebrate her half birthday but never have before. When she was younger I didn’t really want her to have the extra cake…and without the half-cake it seems kinda pointless to celebrate the half birthday. Last year I was super pregnant so we skipped it again.
This year seemed like the right time to start. Jonathan’s first birthday is a few days away (can you believe he’s already a year old?!) and Adaline was a little jealous and having a hard time understanding that this is not her birthday, or party, or cake. Giving her a little half-birthday celebration was something special for her before all of the focus shifts to Jonathan.
We celebrated with half of a cake, 3 and a half candles, and half plates.
We also sang Adaline “Halfie Birthday”.
It still sounds like “happy”. Oh well.
(Email and feed readers click here to watch the video.)
At the end of the video she’s running away from the candle smoke. She told us to “Get that stinky thing outta here!”
Adaline received half of a birthday card and a small present from the dollar store. We gave her the whole present. Only giving half of a present to a 3.5 year old would be a little cruel since she doesn’t quite understand it yet.
She was happy with her little celebration but she did get upset because there weren’t any balloons and she asked, “Where are all the people?”. All of those big birthday parties are coming back to haunt me.
In addition to measuring height on their birthday each year it has also been our tradition to measure height on each half birthday. Now I know why none of her clothes fit anymore!
Look how grown up she looks after just 6 months!
This half-birthday took me less than a half hour to plan 😉 All it took was a trip to the dollar store and making/buying a small cake.
(The cake looks deceiving big in the photos…it was very small.)
The scary part is that I only have 6 more months to plan her 4th birthday party!

🙂 Thanks, Rachael!
I was going to do a cupcake, but it’s kinda hard to make/buy only one cupcake…and then cut it in half. I was so glad Hubby found that cute little cake. We’re going to have cake coming out of our ears soon with the boy’s birthday coming up and I didn’t want to add to the madness.

Thanks, Becky 🙂
I know, I can’t believe the baby is going to be a year old. It seriously seems unreal. People say they grow up so fast…but it’s even faster than you think!

The half idea sounds interesting. I’m not of a birthday person, but I can see where this could really help with keeping info as kids grow older etc.

Thank you 🙂
She loved the cake too, but she was confused as to why there were no people at her “party”. Maybe next year she’ll get it 😉

Yay, Melissa!
I think half-birthdays are so fun. And it worked out great for us since our kids birthdays are almost exactly 6 months apart!
Thanks for stopping by 🙂

That’s an adorable idea! Well, I have four children (I still do something for my 21YO every year) so I’d never get a break from birthdays! 🙂 So no thank you. Our tradition is really just to make it a big deal. If the actual birth day falls on a weekday we celebrate with just us (me and the kids) with cupcakes or a mini cake, and maybe a present or two from mom/me. At a later day there is a party – guests, presents, games, decorations, fun-fun-fun. I don’t actually throw parties for my oldest, but I think I’m going to do one for her 30th if her significant other “allows” me to. 🙂

Oh my, I could imagine birthdays would be pretty constant if you celebrated halfs with 4 kids! My kids’ birthdays are almost exactly 6 months apart, so we would be celebrating one birthday and one half-birthday at the same time. 3 days after this was posted my son had his first birthday. He’ll get to “celebrate” his 1.5 birthday right after my daughter turns 4 this year 🙂
We do big parties for the real birthday each year. The half-birthday thing is actually just the half-cake and song…not a big to-do. So, it should be pretty easy to keep up with over the years. And I’ll be keeping and re-using the banner and hats each year 🙂

This might just be my favorite thing I’ve seen all week! My 3 year old keeps saying she’s almost 4 but she’ll be 3.5 in Feb and we’ve been trying to find special things to do before her little brother arrives the end of the month- this is so simple and sweet I love it!!!!!

Glad you like it 🙂 I think my daughter really needed this last year with her brother’s 1st birthday coming up. It’s tough being the big sister!
