Christmas Traditions: Gift Wrapped Doorway and Christmas Blocks

When Santa was here on Christmas Eve, not only did he leave presents for the children, and leave his messy boot prints all over our room…but he also gift wrapped the doorway!

Now the Christmas tree and the presents were trapped behind a wall of wrapping paper. The only way to get to the gifts…was to bust through the wrapping paper!

It was actually harder than it looks to bust through that paper! Because of the way our doorway is set up there were actually two layers of wrapping paper to get through.

Perhaps at your house the bedroom doorway gets wrapped instead of the living room, or perhaps it’s tissue paper or streamers instead of wrapping paper.
The great thing about the gift wrapped doorway tradition is that it can work for so many different families, whether Santa visits your house or not! It’s one that mom’s and dad’s can do themselves without Santa’s help. It’s one that teenagers can enjoy and look forward to as much as little children.

Another Christmas morning tradition that we have in our family is the ceremonial knocking down of the Christmas blocks. Okay, it’s not ceremonial at all…but it is fun! In the photo below Jonathan was almost 11 months old and he crawled right to the blocks to knock them over.

It will be interesting to see how long it takes the kids to knock the blocks down this year. Will they be more interested in Santa’s footprints or the presents? Or will they knock the blocks down right away? Will they fight over who gets to knock the blocks down or cry because “So-and-so knocked the blocks down first and I wanted to do it!”
I mean, of course I like to purposely implement traditions that will inevitably create discourse amongst the children…who doesn’t?! 😉
So far knocking down the blocks has been a fun little Christmas morning tradition, we’ll see if it remains fun as the kids get older!
2013 Update: Our wrapped doorway was a little less exciting this year. Check it out here: Merry Christmas 2013! Jon seemed a little overwhelmed on Christmas morning, but when my husband pointed out the blocks to him he was thrilled to knock them down! 🙂

Adaline loved it, although she had a tough time getting through it last year (she was 3). I’m sure they’ll look forward to doing this for years 🙂

I think doors decorated with gift wrap are so cute! The kids do love it. I just wonder if mine will fight over who gets to bust through first once my son is old enough to care!

Go for it! We did this for the first time last year to be sure Adaline was strong enough to bust through there, but you can use crepe paper as well 🙂

How fun! We might steal the gift wrapped doorway this year! We do streamers over the door for birthday mornings, and they love it! We not do something similar for Jesus’s birthday?

I have never seen this before, love it!!! That would stop the 3am snooping with flashlights too (what I used to do) so mom and dad would get the truest reaction to Santa’s surprises! So cute. (sits girls!)

I hear a lot of parents say that the kids start without them and it’s hard for me to imagine! My sister and I were never morning people…so our parents actually had to wake us up on Christmas morning! Some parents leave the stockings in the rooms to keep the kids busy until they get up!
I thought about wrapping the bedroom doors instead of the living room, but I my kids are still too little for that. Maybe when they’re older.

This is such a cool Christmas morning idea – I may try it with my kids. Thanks for sharing! We have some normal Christmas Eve traditions – dinner out, our local lights festival, cookies and egg nog for Santa. Christmas morning is spent on opening gifts and just enjoying each other’s company, but nothing specific that we ALWAYS do.

Thanks for sharing, Katie! Most of our traditions are throughout the month or packed into Christmas Eve. Christmas Day is mostly just presents and hanging out with family at Grandma’s house. But we do have the wrapping paper on the doorway, Santa boot prints, and the Christmas blocks on Christmas morning 🙂

What a fun idea! My girls are such early risers. Right now they are young enough that they come and wake us up, but that may not last too long. This would be a fun way to make sure we hear them on Christmas morning.

It sounds like a lot of parents of early risers just may start using the wrapping paper as a Christmas morning “booby trap” 😉
My sister and I are not morning people, so our parents always had to wake us up on Christmas morning! We were especially tired from falling asleep near the window trying to hear Santa’s sleigh bells the night before 🙂

I gift-wrapped the door this year, but one of the kids had to get up at 4 am to potty, so it was a good thing I left the bottom part unwrapped! They thought it was fun and silly, so I’ll probably do it again next year. We do stockings, breakfast, church and then presents on Christmas morning at our house.

We always had breakfast in our stocking. We got an orange, a muffin, a hard boiled egg and a handful of Hershey kisses. That was it. No toys or gifts. Gifts from Santa were always wrapped.

My family builds a Christmas Trap outside our bedroom door every Christmas Eve. It is designed to alert my parents that we are awake and trying to get to the tree too early. There are some fun rules that go along with it. Check out the website I just created about it! In face sometimes we use wrapping paper JUST LIKE THIS POST as part of the trap! I totally love it!!!!
