Uncle Ugly’s Christmas Sweater Jamboree 2011

In 2010 our family started a new Christmas Eve tradition: Uncle Ugly’s Christmas Sweater Jamboree, which is just a fancy way of saying “Ugly Christmas Sweater Competition”. It was a hit and my very own Cool Daddy came away as the victorious champion!

For 2011 some contestants upped their game, others dropped out altogether (party poopers).

Let’s start things off with a group photo of the cool family.

Ugly Christmas Sweaters Tradition

Here is Cool Daddy, last year’s Ugly Christmas Sweater Champion. We were all relieved that he chose to ditch the creepy mustache from last year.

It’s difficult to describe what’s happening with his sweater, because I honestly don’t know. He’s sporting a lovely lady’s sweater vest with flashing snowflake lights on one side and candy cane garland on the other. Look closely and you will see a gold and a red tinsel tree on either of his shoulders (blends into the background, boo!). He added some Christmas underwear from the Dollar Tree because…well, I don’t know. I have no idea why anyone would pin underwear to their sweater, but it happened. I apologize.

He paired his sweater with some Christmas tree pajama bottoms and a snazzy plastic candy cane cane. Yes, a cane cane.

Here I am rocking an ugly Christmas sweater, maternity style! I was almost 8 months pregnant with Jonathan.

I trimmed a red sweater vest with tacky multi-colored disco ball garland. My baby bump is adorned with a Christmas wreath with flashing snowman lights. The wreath is topped with double bow goodness, a giant felt red bow and a giant shiny silver gift bow. A Santa Claus stocking on the side is the perfect place to tuck the battery pack from the lights.

In 2010 my sister totally flaked out on the sweaters and barely participated. This year she wore a red sweater, which was an improvement. She altered the sweater by writing “Merry Christmas” in magic marker and attaching a baby onesie, or is it a dog shirt? She’s wearing a baby bib around her neck. Why? I don’t know. I’m confused by the whole thing. Perhaps the “bah humbug” on her shirt is the key to it all. I do enjoy her headgear which is actually a tissue box cover.

Last year after my sister dropped the ball my brother-in-law was stuck with a completely un-Christmasy sweatshirt. He did bring home the title of “Most Naturally Ugly Sweater” in 2010 because his was the only one completely unaltered. In 2011 he was in it to win it. This completely unaltered black sweater vest has charming plaid accents that add country appeal. The sweater is perfectly complimented by a turtleneck covered in poinsettias on a field of green.

My mom is stuck on Christmas in this red sweatshirt accented with puffy Christmas stickers in the shape of a Christmas tree. The children had taken quite a few of her stickers off of her shirt before I could get a picture. A sticky situation to say the least! (bah-dum-ching)

My cousin, Ben, took the loss hard last year. He had come with his game fast on, an entire Christmas tree on his chest, and presents on his feet and he still failed to bring home the title of “Ugly Christmas Sweater Champion”.

In attempt to keep history from repeating itself, Ben kicked things up a notch with this celestial beauty. A swatch of blue framed in fluffy fiber fill is the perfect heavenly background for this dollar store plastic doll posing as an angel. Perched on a tuft of cloud she is just out of reach of her harp made of Styrofoam. She is accompanied by a few other heavenly hosts and doves. Accessories include a marabou halo, angel wings, and puffy cloud shoes.

My cousin Aunia is a brick house, or at least her sweater is. Strategically placed strips of white foam on a red shirt creates the illusion of bricks. In the center sits a door decorated with a lovely lit wreath. That’s not all…open the door to find a festive living room complete with Christmas tree and presents! Ugly or adorable?

Ben was more than pleased to earn the title of Ugly Christmas Sweater Champion. My baby bump and I waddled away with the title of “Most Overall Festive Attire”, and Matt claimed the title of “Most Naturally Ugly Sweater” for the second year in a row.

Birthday Traditions: Personalized Birthday CD

On her birthday our little one wakes up to the sound of her very own personalized birthday cd.

Hip-Hip Hooray It’s Your Birthday Personalized Kids Music CD
Birthday CD IMGP3320c2txt3

She loves dancing around to the songs and gets so excited when she hears them say her name. She asks to listen to it for a week after her birthday and then we have to slowly back off of it so that it doesn’t lose its appeal 😉

I love the idea of this cd so much that I plan on getting one for all of my future children and I gave one to my nephew for his birthday!

Watch the videos below of Adaline’s birthday dance the past two years to see a cute baby and hear some samples of the songs.

Birthday Traditions: Cake Server and Knife

cakeserverIMGP1333ctxt3

One of my most favorite and easy birthday traditions is both sweet and savvy 😉 Did you buy a beautiful cake server and knife for your wedding that is sitting in a box somewhere?

Starting on Adaline’s first birthday we dug our wedding cake server and knife out of storage and used it to cut her birthday cake. Last year we also used it to cut my birthday cake and my husband’s.

For Adaline’s second birthday we used it once again to cut and serve her birthday cake.

Don’t let your wedding knife and cake server go to waste!
Start using it on all of your family’s birthday cakes this year and start a new tradition.

Do you use your wedding knife and cake server for special occasions?

Birthday Tradition: Professional Birthday Photos

One of our birthday traditions is to have professional photos taken each year. For the past two years I’ve taken Adaline to J.C. Penney’s on her actual birthday, August 4, where she has pictures taken in her birthday dress. We might not always do it on her actual birthday but it worked out that way the past few years and I’m glad that we have some good birthday photos of her.

Adaline also had her 1st birthday photos taken in a romper that I wore in my 1st birthday photos. There’s at least one slight difference in our appearance 😉

I know that’s way bigger than a smash cake. I forgot to ask my mom to make a little cake to take with us so she stopped by the grocery store and this was the smallest cake they had! Let’s just say that between this and her actual birthday cake, smash cake, and cupcakes we were eating cake for weeks and I literally gained 10 pounds!

Happy 2nd Birthday Adaline!

Today my beautiful baby girl is turning 2 years old! I can’t believe how grown up she is and how quickly time goes by. I’m so proud of her 🙂

We have some plans for today, but we’ll see how that goes.
Things didn’t exactly go as planned last year…

I wanted to get a photo of Adaline in this chair each year on her birthday so that we can watch her grow. She wasn’t entirely cooperative 😉 These are the best photos in the bunch!

I also wanted to get a picture of Adaline standing in front of her daddy and I each year. You can see how that went…

I wanted to take a photo of Adaline exactly at her birth minute, but (because hubby had been called into work all week when he was supposed to be off) we were behind on party planning and had to go out to the store in the evening. She spent her birth minute in the car eating puffs.

And it wasn’t until after I took the photo that I noticed the time was off on the camera so it actually says the photo was taken an hour earlier!

I wanted to measure Adaline’s height on her birthday. The actual measuring went fine, but notice the date. Because we were busy we didn’t get around to measuring her until a month after her birthday.

Another thing we didn’t have time for until a month later was to do her keepsake handprint.

We attempted this in September, but I waited too long to stick her hand in the mixture and it had dried up already. I then had to break it all apart and mix in more water, but it still had chunks and lumps. This is the lovely final product.

We bought this awesome birthday candle (you burn it down every year until they turn 21!) and forgot to burn it. We went ahead and lit it that fateful day in September while we were measuring and messing up the handprint. We never got very far so this year will have to burn it twice as long.

I also wanted to get a photo of Adaline next to her candle (when it wasn’t lit) each year so you can watch her grow as the candle gets smaller. We never got around to that 😦

So, last year I had me some big plans for establishing some birthday traditions and things didn’t go exactly as I hoped. This year I’m going to try to get the handprint and measuring done this week and I’m going to try not to mess up the handprint 😉 I don’t have too many big hopes for the photos just yet as she still isn’t too keen on sitting still for pictures. Wish me luck!

Guest Post: Breakfast Basket

This is a guest post from Amanda at Gratefully Growing in Grace. Please stop by Amanda’s blog, you won’t be sorry!

My name is Amanda and I’m so excited to be writing my first guest post for the Coolest Family on the Block! I wonder if they will invite me to be an honorary member of their cool family… I’m visiting from Gratefully Growing in Grace where I write about baby, toddler, and preschool activities, crafts I attempt, recipes I manage to cook successfully, and as any good mommy blog includes, cute stories, photos, and videos of my children. My kiddos are spectacular and I try to be an equally spectacular mommy.

As I wrote about in an Easter post on my blog, instead of giving something up for Lent this year, I decided to add something good into our lives. In order to include my three year old, Mini Me, and my now 10 month old, Little Lady, I came up with the idea of reading a Bible story at breakfast. I used to read my way through breakfast and lunch in my pre-mommy days, before I had the joys of spoon-feeding applesauce and getting up from the table four times in one meal to refill cups, grab an extra rag for spills, etc etc etc. I thought my book-loving children might also enjoy an extra excuse to read during the day. We have a great toddler Bible so that was the first resource I brought to the table.

Mini Me loved our breakfast reading from the get-go, which was no surprise since he adores reading any other time of the day. Little Lady could have cared less at first – she was still pretty little. We would read the short story, talk about the picture, and say a little prayer. It took about 3 minutes, and then it was back to brekist, as Mini Me says. After our 40 days of reading a Bible story at breakfast (okay, maybe only 36 or so because a few days breakfast got hectic what with the applesauce spooning and cup filling, and Mommy forgot), we thought it was so much fun to read at breakfast that we should just continue past Easter.

I added a few resources to the pile and then discovered we needed a basket. We have our toddler Bible (which I have entirely committed to memory at this point) and a set of Bible touch-and-feel story and picture cards. We don’t do the touching part at breakfast or Moses’ basket in the rushes would be covered in oatmeal. We have Little Visits with Jesus that I was very excited about, but it is still a bit too advanced for Mini Me, so that doesn’t get much use yet. We have a couple sets of flashcards – ABCs and 3-letter words for our budding reader, as well as the first set of BOB books since Mini Me is starting to read(ish). We also have a set of Brain Quest cards for 3 year olds that are a daily favorite. There aren’t many things geared specifically toward Little Lady, but for now she loves looking at the pictures and hearing the words of anything we read. She has also learned to fold her hands and pray so she participates in that (provided the prayers only last 2.5 seconds). In addition, I grab any other book off the bookshelf if I have a second.

I never intended our breakfast basket materials to be entirely educational… it is filled with things I quickly grabbed one day that I knew would last us more than a day at a time, unlike a book with a single story in it. Single stories work fine but for my own sanity I need something that is slightly different every day instead of reading That’s Not My Monster every morning.

Also, don’t be fooled by the name of the basket. We also dig into it during lunch or supper if we feel like it – or if Mommy forgets during breakfast – and I know I can always count on Mini Me to remind me about the basket at some meal during the day. We have always been a chatty bunch at mealtimes, but pulling an item out of our breakfast basket just adds a twist to our conversation. The teacher inside me also has to admit that I like squeezing in a few extra minutes of literacy time, too.

As much as milk and toast, our breakfast basket has become a staple of our daily breakfast tradition. Bon appetit!
