Jenn’s 9th Birthday Party 1988

(a.k.a. Happy Birthday to me!)

Today is yet another day that I don’t have any birthday photos to share with you. I know, I know it’s sad. I’ll wait while you go to get a tissue.

I also don’t have any riveting sleepover details to share with you either. However, I do have an awesomely bad photo from 1988 to share with you. Hopefully it will make up for everything!

Just in case you can’t see it…here’s a closer look!

While my sister and I were away on vacation in FL with my grandparents, my mom redecorated our bedroom. Just in case you can’t tell, those walls are Pepto Bismol pink. My favorite color is blue. The walls were blue before they were painted pink. Needless to say I was unhappy about the change. In particular I was sad that our snuggly well-loved comforter had been replaced. I’m certain, though, that I was the most unhappy about my unfortunate hairdo. I don’t how my sister managed to slide by with a cute side ponytail while I got the “night at the Grand Ole Opry” special. My word, that is some poufy hair!

Now I will tell you a semi-related story that has nothing to do with birthdays but everything to do with the doll that I’m holding. When I was four years old I still had a bad thumb sucking habit. My aunt told me that if I stopped sucking my thumb she would buy me this porcelain bride doll. I think that it was on display in a Hallmark store and little 4 year old me thought it was so pretty. I successfully quit sucking my thumb and Betty the Bride (I know, I’m so creative, right?!) became mine. I still have her, but now I think she’s pretty scary. I don’t think I’ll ever get rid of her, though, 4 year old me would be so sad.

Jenn’s 8th Birthday Party 1987

(a.k.a. Happy Birthday to me!)

There aren’t any photos from my 8th birthday. After giving it some thought I figured out that this was around the age that my sister and I started having sleepovers for our birthdays. No party, no photos. We usually had the same two friends over and watched videos and slept on the sofa bed.

For our birthdays we got to choose what we wanted to eat. I can’t think of a time when we didn’t pick my mom’s homemade chicken fingers.

This was a favorite of ours and all of our friends as well. It was something easy to have at a sleepover (or any party) because it didn’t require any silverware. It didn’t even require a plate if you weren’t using dips and the kids were old enough not to make a mess. Speaking of dips, my mom makes an awesome honey-mustard dip…but often times we ate these au naturale. We would also have chips, pretzels, and other snacky things. Salt and Vinegar is my favorite chip flavor but at some point Tato Skins became a favorite birthday chip over all others. If we had pop (that’s what we call soda here in Western PA, people) I think we always chose Dr. Pepper. We would usually get some candy too (3 Musketeers was a favorite of mine).

We also got to choose our dessert. Since we weren’t having parties we stopped asking for fancy cakes. I would usually have cheesecake or some other dessert like Cherry Delight or Oreo Cookie Pie.

Here’s a list of some of our favorite movies that we watched at sleepovers:
The Last Unicorn
The Neverending Story

The Goonies

Below are photos from 1987, the year that I turned 8.

If you think that my sister’s hair bow is cruel and unusual punishment, wait until tomorrow when you see my hairdo! Clearly our mother wished to expose us both to bad 80s fashion equally.

I’m sure that you are very disappointed at the lack of birthday photos on this page. To cheer up, check out this little gem right here. You are welcome.

Jenn’s 7th Birthday Party 1986

(a.k.a. Happy Birthday to me!)

For my 7th Birthday I wanted to go to Hoss’s. I don’t know why. I just liked Hoss’s, I guess. The only one that we had near us was in New Castle (about 40+ minutes away). I went with my family and my best friend, Brooke. As we were on our way to Hoss’s we noticed a big rainbow in the sky. We pulled over on the side of the road to look at it. I think we might’ve even taken some pictures…but they no longer exist 😦 My mom said, ”Look, Jenny, we ordered a rainbow for your birthday!”. I believed her. I was convinced that the rainbow was there just for me. I think it might’ve been the first time I had ever seen a rainbow. I know that I’ve seen rainbows since then, but I honestly don’t remember where or when. This moment has always stuck out in my mind.

When we got to Hoss’s my mom gave me my birthday present. It was one really big box. Inside of it was another box. And another. And on and on until finally there was a very small jewelry sized box. When I opened it up it contained my first pair of earrings. I was so excited to get my ears pierced. I don’t remember anything else about that birthday and I don’t remember much about getting my ears pierced either. I do remember being in the pediatrician’s office and the gun making a really loud popping noise. I didn’t hurt and I didn’t cry. After all…I was a grown up now!

I wasn’t able to find any photos from my 7th Birthday…boo! Since I don’t have any party-ful photos to share with you today, I thought I’d include a photo from the same year that I turned 7, 1986.

*This entire post except for the photos was changed on 10/28/2010. Originally I had forgotten about this birthday and decided to write about the sleepover parties that we used to have. I have since moved all of that text to my 8th birthday party post. After driving past Hoss’s a few weeks ago I said to my mom, “I can’t believe that I forgot to write about my birthday and the rainbow!” The End.*

Jenn’s 6th Birthday Party 1985

(a.k.a. Happy Birthday to me!)

Yay! It’s a Unicorn party!

We have a unicorn cake and girly paper products (I’m pretty sure that purple was my favorite color at the time.). I’m not sure what’s up with the circus-themed party hats, but my guess is it’s the only hats that mom could find so she went with it.

Watching a movie…my guess is that it was “The Last Unicorn”, one of my favorites.

I think this is the first time that I’ve posted and I know who all of my guests are. Yay for me!

Jenn’s 5th Birthday Party 1984

(a.k.a. Happy Birthday to me!)

My 5th birthday party was none other than…Herself the Elf!
Complete with a Herself the Elf cake, made by my mom, and Herself the Elf paper products!

I’m not sure who the little blond boy on the left is. It’s quite possible that he just has chubby cheeks, but to me it looks as though he has them puffed out to blow out my candles! How rude! Everyone knows that only the birthday child gets to spit all over the cake before everyone eats it!

Don’t you wish that you had a sweatshirt with panda butts on it?  Eat your heart out!

When I saw this photo I couldn’t remember what the name of my sister’s doll was. I tried to do a search for 80s crawling baby dolls but baby “Oopsie Daisy” kept coming up. It just didn’t look like the same doll to me. Somehow I managed to come across this doll Piccolo Luca. This definitely looks like the right doll, but I couldn’t find an “Americanized” version of it. I thought for-sure it had some kind of catchy name. Guess not.

Jenny and Grandpa 1984

This was my largest party yet, in terms of guests, and this time there’s only 3 strangers there! I don’t know who the 2 boys on the right are, nor do I know the girl on the right. I do believe, though, that they are siblings (whoever they are).

Jenn’s 4th Birthday Party 1983

(a.k.a. Happy Birthday to me!)

For my 4th birthday I had an awesome castle cake! I can’t really see the paper products well enough to know the exact “theme” of the party…but it’s all about the cake anyway, right?! Well, me and the cake 😉

That’s me and Cheer Bear. Cheer Bear somehow got misplaced over the years and I’m disappointed. I’m not thrilled with the new Care Bears and would’ve loved to have given my original to Adaline. Oh well, at least she’ll have a good collection of 80s Barbies to play with!

Oh yes, that’s a Care Bears nightgown!  Let us all jump with excitement!

I don’t know who that boy is clear over to the right. I also don’t know what the poor person next to him did to not even deserve to be in the picture. Except for the elbow, the elbow is very important.
