Birthday Tradition: Professional Birthday Photos

One of our birthday traditions is to have professional photos taken each year. For the past two years I’ve taken Adaline to J.C. Penney’s on her actual birthday, August 4, where she has pictures taken in her birthday dress. We might not always do it on her actual birthday but it worked out that way the past few years and I’m glad that we have some good birthday photos of her.

Adaline also had her 1st birthday photos taken in a romper that I wore in my 1st birthday photos. There’s at least one slight difference in our appearance 😉

I know that’s way bigger than a smash cake. I forgot to ask my mom to make a little cake to take with us so she stopped by the grocery store and this was the smallest cake they had! Let’s just say that between this and her actual birthday cake, smash cake, and cupcakes we were eating cake for weeks and I literally gained 10 pounds!

Nuchal Transluncency Ultrasound 12 weeks 4 Days

Nearly 3 weeks ago I had my 2nd OB appointment and my Nuchal Translucency ultrasound, but never got around to blogging about it because I was so busy planning Adaline’s birthday party.

On 07/27 I had my 2nd OB appointment. I had an internal exam and PAP smear (Insert sarcastic “Yay” here) and we got to hear the baby’s heartbeat. The doctor actually had a hard time finding the heartbeat. He looked around for awhile and couldn’t hear anything. Then he went lower on my stomach and said that he needed to push my uterus up above my pelvis (*Remember this for later.). Then he found the heartbeat but the baby immediately moved away and he had to try to find it again. Once he did he said that it was good in the 150s.

So, this is a picture of me at my OB appointment at just 12 weeks and 3 days.

Yeah, check out that bump that I’m rocking. And that bump? Apparently not my uterus since the doc had to push it up past my pelvic bone and whathaveyou. What that means, boys and girls, is that the adorable baby bump that I’m rocking is actually my stomach…my big, fat, stomach, that looks like it’s a uterus full of baby. Don’t let it deceive you since my uterus and baby are both hiding discreetly behind my pelvic bone. Dude, why am I so fat?! Well, at least my fat stomach had the presence of mind to disguise itself as a baby bump rather than what it actually is…an oddly shaped muffin top. This way people think I’m a cute little pregnant lady instead of an uber-fatty. Ahem.

Moving on, after getting the news that my baby bump is actually a cellulite bump I took the next logical step and went immediately to the nearest ice cream stand for a chocolate cone. I had it almost entirely demolished before getting back to the car when my hubby took this picture.

When we arrived home and were preparing Adaline for bed she wanted to put on my maternity shirt.

The following day we had my Nuchal Translucency scan. It’s a test that can only be done between 11 and 13 weeks where they measure the back of the baby’s neck to see if it’s thickened which is common in babies with Down Syndrome. They also do a blood test and these two tests together will tell you the risk factor for your baby. We just like to get an extra peek at the baby and 12 weeks is such a great time for an ultrasound because the little ones are moving like crazy even though you can’t feel it and they have tons of space to bounce around it.

I was 12 weeks 4 days at this scan (I was 12w1d at Adaline’s scan) and this baby was completely different from Adaline. Adaline moved like crazy…so much so that it took them the longest time to get her calm enough to measure her neck. She literally bounced off of the walls of my uterus and did flips and everything. This baby was very laid back. The movements were all small wiggles and hand movements, nothing big. It was so interesting to see how different this baby was compared to my daughter. Even though this baby stayed pretty still (s)he was still in the wrong position for the test and we had the opposite problem. The tech had me coughing and smacking my belly to try to get the baby to move into a different position and each time it would just fidget every so slightly as if to say, “Leave me alone! 5 more minutes, mom!”

We asked the tech if she could give us and educated guess on gender. She said that if she had to guess she’d say that it’s a…boy! But she also said that it’s much too early to tell (I knew that already) and that she’s been wrong before at this point. At Adaline’s nt ultrasound they “guessed” girl and obviously they were right, but at my nephew’s nt ultrasound they also “guessed” girl and obviously they were wrong…so a nt gender guess is still 50/50. We’ll be able to find out pink or blue in mid-September.

Right after the scan they let me know that the neck looked normal but to remember that the blood test is important and then I went upstairs to have blood drawn. I’ve read online that many women get a finger prick for this test but both times I’ve had blood drawn from my arm. The hospital called a few days later to let me know that all of the test results looked normal and to give me the risk factor, which I don’t remember the exact number, but it was very low.

Here I am after the ultrasound and blood test. You can see my hubby’s reflection in the window taking the picture.

I’m now 15 weeks and officially out of my first trimester. This seems to be going much faster than my last two pregnancies which I assume is probably because Adaline takes up so much of my time the days go by pretty fast.

Here’s my growing baby bump from the first trimester. You can see that it only took me a few weeks to start growing (although again, it’s just fat ;)).

And just in case you think I’m one of those weirdos that’s stuffing my shirt…here are the bare belly shots.

I have another OB appointment next week and as long as there are no problems my next ultrasound won’t be until mid-September.
Now you’re all caught up on the baby business.

Adaline’s 2nd Birthday Party: Ladybug Picnic

Ladybug Picnic Party

Saturday we had Adaline’s 2nd Birthday Party. The theme was Ladybug Picnic and the colors were red, black, green, and white.

I reused Adaline’s birthday sign from last year out front again. Even though it didn’t go with this year’s theme it’s just too cute to sit in a box and not get used!

I made a balloon wreath for the front door. I decided to use multi-colors so that it can be used each year. I’m so glad that I made it…Adaline loves it!

*Coming Soon: Balloon Wreath Tutorial and Links Post

This way to the Ladybug Picnic…

Tent and Tablescape
We rented a tent for the backyard so that everyone would have a place to sit and eat. Unfortunately it was so hot that once we finished eating we all crammed inside the house for the remainder of the party. Since Adaline and her 1 year old cousin were the only kids I didn’t bother to plan any games or activities.

I thought these pinwheels and mesh butterflies really added a lot in the tent, but it’s hard to tell in the picture. It was a really windy day so Adaline had fun standing in front of the pinwheels yelling, “They’re spinning!” 🙂

I couldn’t get great pictures of the tables because it was so windy and everything kept blowing away!

Centerpieces
I put together these centerpieces of a Ladybug having a picnic 🙂
*Coming Soon: Lady Bug Picnic Centerpiece Tutorial

Place Settings

The tissue paper flowers are actually noisemakers. Adaline loved carrying them around but every time someone would blow one (which wasn’t often) she would say, “I scared of those!”.
I added adhesive wooden ladybugs to these bamboo forks that I got at a party store.

Bug Juice
The Ladybug Lemonade is raspberry lemonade with frozen blackberries in it and the Bug Juice is iced tea. I made the little signs myself. They don’t fit quite right because I was going to set them on the table rather than attach them to the dispensers but it was so windy they kept blowing away.
*FREE Ladybug Fonts Other free fonts include butterflies, bees, and other bugs/insects.

Yay, for number 2 ice cubes!
They’re actually frozen cranberry juice, but you could use food coloring, or Kool-Aid or any red beverage 🙂
(I tried adding blueberries so that the ice cubes would have ladybug spots. Unfortunately the silicone molds were too small and the cubes would break everywhere there was a blueberry :()

Food Table

I made this Happy Birthday sign last minute (literally half and hour before the party) by using a ladybug font and printing it out onto red cardstock.
*FREE Ladybug Fonts Other free fonts include butterflies, bees, and other bugs/insects.

We kept the food really simple. Sandwiches, veggies and dip, and fruit salad. The end.
To keep the picnic theme going we put all of the food inside of baskets from The Dollar Tree and lined them with a cut up plastic gingham tablecloth from a different dollar store.

I got these cute mini bug nets with lollipops in the clearance section of Wal-Mart after Easter.

Ladybug Cake
I decorated this ladybug cake, which is why it looks like such a mess. This is only the 3rd cake that I’ve ever decorated

Nice 😉

Party Hat and Dress
This is a closer look at the hat that I made for Adaline.

Sorry, she’s stuffing her face in the first picture and the antennae are crooked in the other. Oh well.

DIY No Sew Party Hat Tutorial: Step by step instructions 🙂

This is the only picture I have where you can see Adaline’s entire dress. I loved that the dress was gingham so it tied in the picnic theme with the ladybugs…which are pockets by the way ;)! The dress is by Jenny and Me and I got it at Burlington Coat Factory for $9.99!

Photo Display
I set Adaline’s photos up the same way as last year but replaced them with pics of the last 12 months. This year I added sticky felt ladybugs above each photo 🙂

Photo “Booth”
I found a polka dot shower curtain and Wal-Mart and thought it would be perfect for a photo backdrop. We just hung it on the side of the house and put covered chairs in front 🙂

By the end of the day Adaline was not interested in getting a picture with her parents 😦

Birthday Girl…2 years old!

Allow me to be a little over indulgent as a post a hundred pictures of Adaline from her birthday and birthday party last week. A post with party decor from her Ladybug Picnic 2nd Birthday Party will be coming up later this week (whenever I have time to edit the photos), but until then enjoy some photos of my little girl 🙂

Adaline turns 2!
These were photos taken last Thursday on Adaline’s actual birthday.

Her tongue is not usually yellow…that was from an M&M 😉

Adaline’s Birthday Party
Center of attention.

Swatting at bubbles with a noisemaker.
(She carried that thing everywhere but the sound terrified her. “I’m scared of those” she said 😉

Showing mommy the ladybug on her fork 🙂

Eventually she traded in the noisemaker for a pinwheel.

Silly goose

CAKE!
The best picture I could get of Adaline next to her cake.

A little fondant ladybug just for Adaline!

Black fondant in her teeth. Yummy.

Chocolate cake is tasty!

Nice 🙂

Silly faces 😉
The kid is weird. I dig that.

Ladybug Lollipop 🙂
It’ll take her a year to finish that thing!

Pretty girl 🙂

Happy Birthday!

Happy 2nd Birthday Adaline!

Today my beautiful baby girl is turning 2 years old! I can’t believe how grown up she is and how quickly time goes by. I’m so proud of her 🙂

We have some plans for today, but we’ll see how that goes.
Things didn’t exactly go as planned last year…

I wanted to get a photo of Adaline in this chair each year on her birthday so that we can watch her grow. She wasn’t entirely cooperative 😉 These are the best photos in the bunch!

I also wanted to get a picture of Adaline standing in front of her daddy and I each year. You can see how that went…

I wanted to take a photo of Adaline exactly at her birth minute, but (because hubby had been called into work all week when he was supposed to be off) we were behind on party planning and had to go out to the store in the evening. She spent her birth minute in the car eating puffs.

And it wasn’t until after I took the photo that I noticed the time was off on the camera so it actually says the photo was taken an hour earlier!

I wanted to measure Adaline’s height on her birthday. The actual measuring went fine, but notice the date. Because we were busy we didn’t get around to measuring her until a month after her birthday.

Another thing we didn’t have time for until a month later was to do her keepsake handprint.

We attempted this in September, but I waited too long to stick her hand in the mixture and it had dried up already. I then had to break it all apart and mix in more water, but it still had chunks and lumps. This is the lovely final product.

We bought this awesome birthday candle (you burn it down every year until they turn 21!) and forgot to burn it. We went ahead and lit it that fateful day in September while we were measuring and messing up the handprint. We never got very far so this year will have to burn it twice as long.

I also wanted to get a photo of Adaline next to her candle (when it wasn’t lit) each year so you can watch her grow as the candle gets smaller. We never got around to that 😦

So, last year I had me some big plans for establishing some birthday traditions and things didn’t go exactly as I hoped. This year I’m going to try to get the handprint and measuring done this week and I’m going to try not to mess up the handprint 😉 I don’t have too many big hopes for the photos just yet as she still isn’t too keen on sitting still for pictures. Wish me luck!

Tissue Number Birthday Sign (Mini-Tutorial)

I get a lot of compliments, comments, and questions about the Tissue Number Birthday Sign that I made for Adaline’s First Birthday Party. I tried to include all of the links in the original post, but I thought this deserved a post of its own. This is only going to be a “mini” tutorial, which means I’m going to tell you how I made it but you’re going to need to go to the original website for step-by-step instructions.

I found the tutorial for the tissue paper sign here: Prudent Baby

Basically what I did was:
1. I bought an artist’s canvas from The Hobby Lobby
2. I bought a pillowcase and sheet set from Target
(Obviously you can use fabric, but we don’t have a fabric store nearby so I improvised.)
3. I cut one of the pillowcases and stapled it to the canvas
4. I cut tissue paper flowers. Details found here
(Mine looked awful at first…took me awhile to get the hang of it.)
5. I used chalk to make an outline of the #1 on the pillow case
6. I twisted the bottoms of the tissue paper flowers and hot glued them to the pillow case inside the chalk outline.
7. All done!

Like I said the original tutorial that I found and used was Prudent Baby DIY Tissue Number Birthday Sign, they give details and show pictures of how to make it.

NOTE: Apparently WordPress hates me and it keeps breaking my links to the Prudent Baby website. I keep fixing them and it keeps breaking them again. Here are some ways you can hopefully fix that.
1. Click on one of the links to Prudent Baby and if it comes up saying the page doesn’t exist add .html to the end of the url in your browser. I keep doing this within this post and WordPress keeps erases the .html part 😦
OR IF THAT DOESN’T WORK
2. If the two following links don’t work when you click on them try copying and pasting them into your browser (separately of course).
http://www.prudentbaby.com/2010/06/diy-tissue-number-birthday-sign.html
http://www.prudentbaby.com/2010/06/diy-tissue-garland.html
OR IF THAT DOESN’T WORK
3. Go directly to the Prudent Baby homepage at http://www.prudentbaby.com (If that link doesn’t work just copy and paste the url into your browser.) Then type DIY Tissue Number Birthday Sign or DIY Tissue Garland into their search box (currently on the top right sidebar) and links should show up and hopefully work
🙂

Sorry for the inconvenience. I’ve never had this trouble with any other links before.
